Using Forum Marketing

I'm an early start up that expected to utilize forum participation as an initial "word of mouth" marketing strategy. I identified several active forums on the topic (Internet Security) and proceeded to sign up only to read their rules to find they don't allow any "advertising". Anyone have any advice for forum marketing that allows me to participate but not come across as "selling".  My original intention was to ask for opinions about my device (physically cuts off the internet when not in use) and get some input as well as some interest. Any thoughts..

I found that if you put a link in your signature that it helps alot. Some forums have special threads that allow you to place an ad for your business if it is a special deal for the forum members so look for some of them as well.
