Mail Order business

I am interested in knowing what the business model is for the mail order companies that I receive infornation from. One is for general merchandise and the other is for health products, and in either case they use the same format. My experience is that once I order from a company I then am put on other mailing lists and the deluge starts. In the case of the general merchandise the company names are all different but the details are the same, i.e same order blank, same numbering system for goods, same pricing method (reg. price/sale price), same shipping policies, same handling charge, a code no. in the same location on the order blank, etc. Some of the mailings are small or large catalogs and others come in envelopes of 50 or so single sheets. In the case of the health products there are small 6-8 page brochures touting the value of the products, which all have weird sounding names; the same doctor testifies to the value of them, the address is from the state of Illinois, they all have a code number, etc. I am really interested in knowing how that model works and what the code number tells them. Can anyone help me out?
